Adjournment
Although at times the city council has to make difficult decisions that are not popular, I can tell you that the changes to refuse and recycling were voted on only after a very lengthy and thorough analysis of all our current options regarding the Refuse Enterprise Fund. I don't believe anyone on the council wanted to raise rates or fees, but an Enterprise Fund has to be self-sufficient. And I understand completely that not everyone will agree with us choosing not to raise rates and fees more in order to subsidize the recycling operation, but with the changes made, each portion of the fund is now independently sustained. Sierra Vista is not alone in this problem, even larger cities like Tucson and Phoenix are having to cut back on recycling. We want to offer recycling, but, unfortunately, at this time it's not economically feasible for the city to continue operating a recycling drop-off location. However, you can still go to the County's Solid Waste Transfer Station on Highway 90 and pay to drop off your recyclables. And as of March 1st commercial haulers will be allowed to pick up recyclables curbside from residents in city limits. For more information on the refuse and recycling changes click here. Upcoming dates to look forward to: The new Book Nook Cafe is scheduled to open on Feb. 1st inside the Sierra Vista Library!
The West End water tower mural has a start date of March 9th and a completion date of April 17th! That's all for today. I hope you had a pleasant weekend and had a chance to go out and enjoy the lovely weather we've been having. Please do not hesitate to contact me at Carolyn.Umphrey@SierraVistaAZ.gov with any comments or questions. Especially if you still have questions about upcoming changes to refuse operations. I always love hearing from you.
